Sodium-Potassium (Na:K) Ratio

Why the Na:K ratio is more important than sodium alone for blood pressure.

Sodium-Potassium (Na:K) Ratio

VitalSync tracks both sodium and potassium intake and displays the Na:K ratio badge — a metric that research shows is more predictive of blood pressure than sodium alone.

The Science

The INTERSALT trial and subsequent meta-analyses (Perez & Chang 2014; Binia et al. 2015) found that the urinary Na:K ratio has a stronger association with blood pressure than either nutrient measured independently.

  • Potassium independently lowers blood pressure in a dose-response relationship.
  • The WHO recommends an Na:K ratio < 1.0 (molar) as the primary dietary target.

Reading the Badge

Badge ColourNa:K RatioMeaning

Green< 1.0Protective — good electrolyte balance
Amber1.0–2.0Elevated — consider increasing potassium
Red> 2.0Risky — high sodium relative to potassium

How to Improve Your Ratio

  • Increase potassium: bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach, avocados, beans
  • Reduce sodium: avoid processed foods, cured meats, and added salt
  • Track both: VitalSync logs both nutrients from your meal entries
